International Hospitality and Tourism Management BA (Hons)

OVERVIEW

This course runs at Coventry University London in October 2017 and January 2018.

BA (Hons) International Hospitality and Tourism Management is specifically designed for students who wish to embark on a management career in the international hospitality and tourism industries.

The programme provides students with the chance to develop a set of rigorous and industry-relevant analytical tools that can equip graduates for leadership and management positions in a multi-cultural environment.

 The highly practical programme provides the framework to enable successful graduates to prepare for the world of work. It offers students the opportunity to undertake work-related activities such as business simulations and internships.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The first year provides a thorough grounding in the core aspects of tourism including: The Economic Environment of Businesses, Skills for Hospitality and Tourism, International Business Cultures, Foundations of Organisational Behaviour, Services Marketing for Hospitality and Tourism and introduction to Hospitality and Tourism Operations.

The second year builds on these and further develops your skills through the following modules: Financial Planning and Revenue Management for Hospitality and Tourism, Entrepreneurship in a global context, Consumer Behaviour, Business Management and decision-making process, Business Law for Hospitality and Tourism and Project Management for Hospitality and Tourism.

In the final year, you will be able to take optional modules in your chosen field including: International Business Strategy, Research Methods for Hospitality and Tourism, Tourism Destinations Management,

Professional and Consulting Skills for Hospitality and Tourism, International Human Resources Management - and the choice to choose a module on either: a business research project, work placement project or global business simulation.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Students will work with their programme leaders to support and guide their personal and professional development over the three years. Each term, a module leader and teaching fellows in each of their modules will support students.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Learning will be assessed using a combination of exams and coursework such as essays, reports, presentations, simulations, workshop activities and others. Some assessments are taken as group work. Within our assessments we make sure that students not only demonstrate subject knowledge but also develop professional skills such as professional report writing, structuring a logical argument, analysing data or creating a compelling presentation. An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%, coursework, tests and essays 30%. Practical or project work 10%, group work and similar activities 10% and presentations, posters and other activities 10%. 

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 12 contact hours of lectures and seminars. For larger groups, lectures last up to one hour and seminars two hours. Seminars are interactive and may involve group discussions, debates and case studies. Personal study will include 24-hour hours each week - this includes revising, any prep work for tutorials, online activities and prep reading for lectures.

Entry Requirements

Essential Entry Requirements:

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language and Mathematics, or specified equivalents.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DDM

Access: The Access Diploma to include 30 Level 3 credits at Merit, plus GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade A*-C, or specified equivalents.

International Baccalaureate Diploma: 30 points

English as a Foreign Language: IELTS 6.0

WORK PLACEMENTS

Working closely with industry, Coventry University London delivers a comprehensive career-building programme, which includes work-based activities, leadership lectures, and training in career planning and guidance with career paths.

Work experience on the BA (Hons) International Hospitality and Tourism Management programme can be undertaken in a variety of ways;

  • An internship
  • Business simulation
  • Dissertation

International Hospitality and Tourism Management graduates will develop the knowledge and skills, which will help them pursue career opportunities in the tourism, hospitality and leisure industries, in the private and public sector or start their own business.  Students will benefit from study visits to leading hospitality and tourism industry related events and exhibitions. Previous activities have included visits to the World Travel Market along with career-oriented activities such as CV writing and guest lecturers from leading guest speakers.
