This course examines the principles and threats which underpin computer systems, networks and the software development process. Throughout the programme, you will become competent and confident in a range of prevalent topics, such as operating systems, network security, programming language, penetration testing, ethical hacking and more.

This year introduces students to laws, principles and complexities of Computing Science. Starting with an understanding of how systems are breached, you will explore relevant technologies such as wireless and optical networking, software solutions and high-level programming language. In addition, students this year will have the opportunity to work with industry-standard operating systems such as Mac OSX and Microsoft Windows in relation to security issues, setting the foundational blocks for a successful route into years two and three. Students who complete year one are awarded a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Computing Science.

Building on knowledge gained in year one, this year is aimed at building your skillset to an advanced standard. You’ll develop object-orientated analysis, design and implementation skills as you explore complex subjects such as cryptography, digital forensic science and algorithms. Towards the end of the year our skilled lecturers work with you to refine transferable employability skills, as you prepare for a career in cyber security. Students who complete year one are awarded a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Cyber Security.

Overview

Sandwich and placement years give you the opportunity to gain further insight into the industry or career you are seeking to follow. This enables you to contextualise the theoretical models and concepts discussed in the classroom in the work place. Furthermore, if you choose to take advantage of a placement or sandwich year, this version of the degree will help to increase your employment prospects by acquiring skills and gaining an understanding of what employers expect of graduates.

Overview

In the final year of study, you look at complex subjects such as the Internet of Things and the underlying principles. You will analyse and evaluate potential risk and exploitation in secure programming, and assess a range of issues such as buffer overflows and how to mitigate a number of security risks. Finally, you’ll get the chance to demonstrate your skills in a number of independent projects, taking charge of processes from inception to delivery. Students who complete year three are awarded a BSc (Hons) Degree in Cyber Security.

Your main study themes are:

  •  Independent and autonomous working: You will gain the ability to critically appraise a cyber security scenario, with a view to apply modern methods efficiently neutralise a threat.
  • Industry Adaptation: Factors that influence the technological industry, policies and processes which includes technology development, legislation and environmental factors.
  • Project Management: You will be effective and efficient in project management, time management and organisation. You will be introduced to a number of applications and processes to facilitate the successful development of management skills.
  • Research Methods: Critical analysis, reflection, information searching and experimental design in security, data collection, analysis and design.

The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade.

Assessment methods vary and include, practical class and project performance, written practical reports, project thesis, oral presentations, tutorial tasks and assessments which take place at the end of each six-week block.

Full-time students
Our courses run in six-week blocks and we offer up to six of these each calendar year. Normally you will study four blocks per year.
As a full-time student a standard learning block will include 21 hours each week, in the form of seminars and classes, practical work and tutorials.
Students will also be expected to spend time on independent and self-directed study in the form of further reading/research and assignments. All study is guided so you’ll have plenty of support.

Part-time students 
Part-time students receive 8 hours of teaching each week, with classes split into two categories subject to numbers:
Saturday - 9am-6pm.
Tuesday and Thursday - 6pm-10pm.
Please note: part-time courses run subject to numbers.

A tutorial programme runs throughout the duration of the course, providing students with the opportunity to enhance academic, personal and professional development. Students will work with academic tutors to set targets and goals and reflect on their academic performance, while having the chance to gain new skills and knowledge to support their academic performance and personal development.

Class groups are kept low. This way, students can take advantage of small numbers to increase contact time with lecturers.

80 UCAS tariff points. All courses require 5 GCSEs at A-C including Maths and English.

All HNC/HND/Degree courses require at least two A2 Levels or a BTEC equivalent qualification.

Foundation Year

This degree programme has an integral stage 0 attached to it, so if you do not meet the entry requirements you may enter at the foundation level. Successful completion of a relevant Foundation Year course will guarantee you progression onto this degree programme.

Access to HE Course

Access to HE courses aim to bring your academic skills and topical knowledge up to optimal standard for higher education study. If you undertake an Access to HE course and then successfully complete a degree programme, the remaining balance of your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off.

Fees & Funding

Full-time

For the academic year 2018/19, each six-week block will cost £1,550. A full academic year is made up of four of these blocks, so this means that a normal full-time year is £6,200. This covers some of your learning materials, access to the CU London Library and Learning Services, all your classes and online tutorials. 

Part-time

The part-time course fee is dependent on how many modules you choose to study in an academic year.
Each stage of the qualification (HNC/HND/Degree) will require you to complete four academic blocks. You can study up to four blocks in one academic year or study at a slower pace (usually three academic blocks per year). Please note if you do study at a slower pace you will need to re-enrol to complete your studies in the next academic year.

For the academic year 2018/19, each block for part-time students will cost £1,550. Therefore, the total fee per stage of your qualification if completed in the academic year 2018/19 is £6,200.

Funding

As a full-time or part-time student resident in the UK or EU, you can apply for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees at CU London from Student Finance England.

An important vocation in the modern digital age, cyber security professionals work with creativity and analytical thinking to understand how systems can be broken, protected and used. A career in cyber security is challenging, dynamic and highly transferable, meaning graduates may have the opportunity to work internationally throughout their careers as there is a recognised global demand for trained specialists.

Cyber security is a rapidly growing market, with plenty of scope to develop a very lucrative career. Graduates from this course can enter a number of specialisms, such as a Cyber Security Consultancy, Software Developer/Programming, Cyber-Crime Investigation or Digital Forensics Analysis.
