Overview

Counselling is the skilled and principled use of a collaborative relationship using a variety of counselling models and interventions. Counselling is a healing and organic process that occurs when a counsellor and client come together to bring about change and to develop a therapeutic relationship. The counselling relationship can be a place for clients to recognise how they are feeling and explore any past, present and possibly future issues/life events that they may have. This course will provide students with all the necessary knowledge and skills required to work as an ethical and professional counselling practitioner. This is an integrative counselling course which means students will learn a variety of counselling models and how to integrate these together creating a therapist that can tailor support to the client's needs.

If you are interested in a career in counselling, then this degree provides an excellent route into the profession. This course has been specifically designed to enable students in becoming a qualified counsellor; we support your journey into counselling from enrolment, registering you as a student member of the BACP in the second year of the degree. In addition, we undertake all the DBS checks for you and cover the costs of your student membership and personal indemnity insurance.

This BACP student membership provides further resources, guidance and encouragement to help you progress, in addition to the expert support you receive from our qualified tutors. On successful completion of this course, student members can upgrade to Individual Members and apply for individual BACP membership and accreditation.

Overview

This introductory year underpins the fundamental elements of counselling practice. You will begin to develop the ability to confidently use secondary research skills by gathering, retrieving, reviewing and synthesising information appropriate to your area of study. Students who complete year one are awarded a Higher National Certificate (HNC) Counselling: Integrative Theory & Practice.

Modules

  • Counselling Models and Concepts

    In this introductory module, you will explore the essential foundations of counselling. You will learn emotive and professional boundaries, the ideal environment for effective practice, establishing and defining a professional relationship and building rapport with your client. 

  • Social, Legal and Ethical Context of Counselling

    Protecting both professional-and client rights are paramount to a successful practice. You will evaluate situations that can leave someone at risk, discuss when to break client confidentiality and the laws and procedures that protect you when you do so. You will also cover different social groups and adapting your practice for diverse cultures.

  • Counselling Skills and the Therapeutic Relationship

    You’ll learn essential skills and practices of counselling such as how to approach a client with tact, key listening skills, verbal and non-verbal language, eye contact, body posture and establishing time boundaries. A practical module, you will observe and take part in reflective counselling sessions to give and receive feedback.  

  • Personal Development and Reflective Practice

    To help others develop, you must be able to develop personally. Identifying what you have already achieved and future goals, we work with you to create an effective Personal Development Plan. You’ll also establish progression routes to achieve your goals, which could include the use of complimentary training, additional qualifications or practical experience.

Overview

As the course progresses, students build on the knowledge gained in year one to cement a solid foundation of core principles. At this level, you’re working on more complex issues. Enhancing your fundamental understanding of counselling theory, you’ll put your knowledge into practice in a number of interactive modules. You will explore different modes of counselling, adaptive approaches and evaluate reasons for counselling, such as mental health problems. Students who complete year two are awarded a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Counselling: Integrative Theory & Practice.

Modules

  • Counselling Integration

    You will have the opportunity to practice a range of intervention methods. You will be introduced to various forms and approaches of therapy, including cognitive therapy, the humanistic approach, the psychodynamic approach and the newest form-integrated therapy. This module prepares you to aptly deal with a variety of clients and tailor solutions accordingly.

  • Mental Health Counselling

    An important and popular module, you will assess a variety of mental health conditions and appropriate approaches. You’ll look at illnesses such as anxiety and depression and more serious forms of psychosis, such as schizophrenia. You will develop awareness as a counsellor to identify illnesses and where it is appropriate to refer clients.

  • The Developing Self

    This is a continuation of the personal development and reflective practice studies in year one. You will understand how human being develops over their life span and identify stages of progression. There are both theoretical and practical assessments and you’ll use role plays to strategise approaches for numerous life stages in one room.

  • Research Methods for Counselling

    Learn how to correctly conduct effective research by using relevant methods. We cover a variety of ethical and research practices, such as how to do a systematic review, the difference between a primary and secondary data collection study, various qualitative and quantitative data sources and how research outcomes impact differently on subsequent treatments and referrals.

Overview

In the exciting final year, students refine the art of independent working. You are now working at a professional level, with the ability to conduct and analyse how interventions are carried out at an advanced level. In addition to practical work hours, you clarify and refine your enhanced understanding of the counselling process by conducting secondary research, ready for application in industry. Students who complete year three are awarded a BA (Hons) degree in Counselling: Integrative Theory & Practice.

Modules

  • Advanced Skills in Integrative Counselling and the Therapeutic Process

    In this module, you are building on the personal, analytical, emotive and professional skills taught in years one and two. You will establish and refine your own personal therapeutic style, critically evaluating the process of development. Assessments can take the form of written reports of mock counselling sessions where you practice the theories you have learned.

  • Working with Attachment, Loss and Bereavement

    Here you will learn the correct procedures and process to implement when dealing with attachment, loss and bereavement. A complex and common subject, it is imperative counsellors are equipped with the necessary tools to deal with sensitive subjects appropriately. During this module, you will learn and practice the best approaches to do so effectively.

  • Skills in Integrative Counselling and the Therapeutic Process

    In this module, you will learn the skills and professional behaviours necessary to practice as an autonomous integrative practitioner. You'll have the opportunity to further your reflexive capacity with respect to the development of clinical skills and learn various types of integration, such as pluralism and eclectic approaches.

  • Research Project

    This module is a culmination of the subjects taught throughout the programme. You get the chance to specialise in one or more subjects that captured your interest over the course of the programme and present a project on it.

On completion you will be able to:

Full-time students
Our courses run in six-week blocks and we offer up to six of these each calendar year. Normally you will study four blocks per year.
As a full-time student a standard learning block will include 21 hours each week, in the form of seminars and classes, practical work and tutorials.
Students will also be expected to spend time on independent and self-directed study in the form of further reading/research and assignments. All study is guided so you’ll have plenty of support.

Part-time students 
Part-time students receive 8 hours of teaching each week, with classes split into two categories subject to numbers:
Saturday - 9am-6pm.
Tuesday and Thursday - 6pm-10pm.
Please note: part-time courses run subject to numbers.

A tutorial programme runs throughout the duration of the course, providing students with the opportunity to enhance academic, personal and professional development. Students will work with academic tutors to set targets and goals and reflect on their academic performance, while having the chance to gain new skills and knowledge to support their academic performance and personal development.

Class sizes are kept low. This way, students can take advantage of small numbers to increase contact time with lecturers.

Fees & Funding

Full-time

For the academic year 2018/19, each six-week block will cost £1,832.25. A full academic year is made up of four of these blocks, so this means that a normal full-time year is £7,329. This covers some of your learning materials, access to the CU London Library and Learning Services, all your classes and online tutorials. 

Part-time

The part-time course fee is dependent on how many modules you choose to study in an academic year.
Each stage of the qualification (HNC/HND/Degree) will require you to complete four academic blocks. You can study up to four blocks in one academic year or study at a slower pace (usually three academic blocks per year). Please note if you do study at a slower pace you will need to re-enrol to complete your studies in the next academic year.

For the academic year 2018/19, each block for part-time students will cost £1,832.25. Therefore, the total fee per stage of your qualification if completed in the academic year 2018/19 is £7,329.

Funding

As a full-time or part-time student resident in the UK or EU, you can apply for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees at CU London from Student Finance England.

Career prospects

Due to changes in government and culture, more employers in the public, private and voluntary sectors seek trained professionals to meet demands in a variety of organisations.

The programme is tailored to prepare you for the job market by giving you the skills and knowledge to find successful employment in either counselling or job roles that request candidates with a counselling background.

The course will teach you how to set up in private practice and how to find employment in different industries. Career opportunities include, working with the NHS through community health care trusts, such as time limited therapy and educational institutions.

Opportunities also include community based charities and employment through the voluntary and the welfare sector. Due to a recent change, the Work and Health Programme which embeds support work has created lots of careers in the industry for counsellors offering both one to one and group therapy.
