To manage risks and develop sustainably, we must understand and cater the requirements of/for civil infrastructures and our environment. This course blends together environmental science and management with civil engineering.

The UK Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), US Bureau of Labour Statistics, United Nations (UN) and various international organisations have reported a high skill shortage in environmental engineering throughout the developed and developing world to respond to the increasing climate, demographic (urbanisation), socio-economic and environmental changes.

Our professionally accredited civil and environmental engineering course blends core civil engineering skills and environmental science knowledge, together with numerical and management principles to assess, prevent, protect and control natural and man-made environmental disasters and to lead on sustainable development at local and international level.

It can be studied as the four-year MEng or five-year MEng with Professional Development Training (course code H222) or as the three to four-year BEng (course code H220) by full-time, sandwich or part-time mode of attendance. The four-stage MEng course fully satisfies the educational base for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, whereas the three-stage BEng satisfies the Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status. By academic progression from BEng to MEng or via our integrated masters courses enables you to achieve educational base CEng status.

Our Civil and Environmental Engineering courses are accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), which represents (the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) on behalf of the Engineering Council. The BEng course is accredited for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Whereas the MEng course is accredited by ICE for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. In addition, if you take the Professional Development Training option, the opportunities to become a professionally qualified Chartered Engineer (CEng) in the civil and environmental engineering field are high.

Course information

Our MEng/BEng Civil and Environmental Engineering degree is built on three key themes of: health, safety and environmental risk management; sustainable development; and engineering and environmental design, analysis and practices.

By the end of Stage Three (BEng), if successfully completed your studies will have covered all of the basic academic capabilities necessary to achieve Incorporated Engineer status and you can meet Chartered Engineer standards by progressing to the end of Stage Four (MEng). Your studies begin with a firm foundation of maths, environmental science and core civil engineering skills such as laboratory, design, analytical (technical, social, economic/financial, environmental, managerial, legal and ethical context) skills. 

You will be introduced to the fundamental principles of structural mechanics, structural behaviour of materials and mathematics for use in solving engineering problems, incorporating safety and sustainability considerations. As the course progresses, we cover more advanced theories of analysis for both statics and dynamics. The skill of using mathematics to develop engineering solutions to these advanced theories is essential and is embedded throughout. We also cover the principles of current methods of structural analysis to Eurocode standards.

Engineering analysis and materials covers the principles of construction material behaviour, soil mechanics and fluid mechanics. You should develop an understanding of the various materials used in construction (such as concrete and cementitious materials, steel, other metals, timber, masonry components, polymers and emerging materials) and geomaterials (such as granular soils and clays), and their suitability for specific applications within the construction industry, while considering construction methodssafety and sustainability. You should develop the necessary skills to interpret experimental data for use in solving engineering problems.

Stage 1 of this course is common for all Civil Engineering family of courses (Civil/ Structural/ Environmental), we will also introduce you to environmental systems and the basic principles of environmental and pollution science, including the range of chemical and physical stressors, impacts of pollution on people and the environment and the interactions between the natural environment and the built environment. You will have the chance to develop theoretical knowledge and practical experience in pollution monitoring, including an introduction to sampling and analysis methodologies for air, soil and water as well as noise pollution.

The Add+vantage modules teach a range of work experience and extra-curricular activities that are taken each year, and broaden students knowledge and skills within a work focused environment. There is a very wide range of Add+vantage free-choice subject areas, and they are arranged in themes.


Stage 2 of the course builds on the first stage to provide knowledge and understanding of key subjects such as hydraulics, geo-technics, structural analysis, design and materials. In addition to this we will provide the environmental engineering core subjects on “Alternative Energy” as well as “Pollution Science, Prevention & Control”.

You will have the chance to develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills in pollution monitoring, including an introduction to sampling and analysis methodologies for air, soil and water as well as noise pollution. You will gain knowledge on assessing risks, impacts of pollution on people and the environment, Environmental regulations, water & wastewater treatment to prevent & control. Pollution.

This stage is also for direct entry point for full time or part time students with relevant HND or similar degree. Following your second year, the BEng SW & MEng SW students will have an option to apply for placement or study abroad.

Following your second year, as part of Stage 2 in year 3 the BEng sandwich students will take-up a one-year professional work placement in an Industry. This option will not be applicable to the MEng with Professional Development Programme (PDP) students where the students have opportunity in their 4th year. The students doing BEng cannot of MEng Professional Development Training Programme.

This year 3, Stage 2, the MEng & BEng students enrolled for the sandwich will study abroad in our partner academic institution.

The students taking MEng with PDP option OR the students taking Industrial Placement option CANNOT do the Study Abroad sandwich. Similarly, the students taking Study Abroad cannot do PDP or Industrial Placement sandwich.


As the course progresses to Stage 3, (year 3 for Full- time BEng, Year 4 for BEng sandwich & Year 4 for MEng Study abroad) we start to look at more advanced knowledge of areas such as environmental assessment, water modelling and engineering. For the research dissertation, you will have to demonstrate your analytical, problem solving, innovation, communication and information management skills, enabling you to establish creative solutions when researching problems and issues.

Your skills may be further enhanced by group projects with inter/multidisciplinary activities at each stage, using appropriate environmental and humanitarian engineering with computer and field simulations, as well as building information modelling (BIM). In addition to the know-how gained from the lectures and learning support, there may be opportunities to collaborate with the other courses, international and part-time students. Group and project work has the potential to further develop your appreciation of the multidisciplinary nature of civil biased environmental engineering, as well as the importance of effective project management, teamwork, good communication and lateral thought.

The fourth stage of the course is for MEng students only (year 4 full-time MEng, year 5 for MEng Study abroad and year 5 for MEng with PDP), in which you should further specialise in environmental risk, sustainable development, failure analysis and design of hydraulic/seismic structure.

Our main study themes are: 

  • Health, Safety and Environmental Risk Management (HSERM): We aim to make you aware of and reminded of the importance of public and occupational health and safety, environmental risk assessment and management from the start to the end of your course. You will also be encouraged to consider the HERM aspects within your laboratory and field-based coursework and propose precautions that could be taken to avoid or manage them.

  • Environmental Engineering & Sustainable development (EESD):  We aim to develop your understanding of the linkage between and balanced approach required for environmental sustainability and engineering development. You should learn how to apply environmental science, appropriate technology and sustainable environmental risk management principles and technologies.

  • Engineering and Environmental design, analysis and practices (EDAP): We aimed to provide knowledge in Structure, Geo-technics, Material, Hydraulic with required Maths & basic surveying for you to develop your skills in design, analysis and practices. These programmes are designed to develop your skills in creative but sustainable design, critical analysis by independent learning, judgement and teamworking to solve practical problems, via a series of individual and group projects. It should give you practise and insight into the role of the engineer as a planner, designer analysist and a project manager. You will develop an effective approach to perform engineering and environmental design, analysis and communicate, demonstrate and deliver the outputs and outcomes with confidence and clarity.
  • Our MEng Civil & Environmental Engineering (H222) courses will be delivered in four stages: 4 years full-time; 5 years with Professional Development Programme (PDP); 5 years’ sandwich (study abroad) or 5 years part-time (Stage 2 entry with appropriate work experience and qualification) mode of attendance.
  • Our BEng Civil & Environmental Engineering (H220) courses will be delivered in three stages: 3 years full-time; 4 years’ sandwich (study abroad or work placement) or 4 years part-time (Stage 2 entry with appropriate requirements) mode of attendance.

At appropriate stages of the course, we try to organise guest lectures from current practitioners and you will also have opportunities to participate in fieldtrips at each stage of the course, both at home and overseas. For example, UK field activities have previously included environmental pollution testing and monitoring, as well as examining sustainable construction practice. We also organise a range of site visits, including the chance to visit a Severn Trent Water wastewater treatment plant and the Thames Barrier for a demo on flood modelling. 

You will have the opportunity to undertake challenging independent research dissertation in Stage Three of your course in which you will tackle questions at the cutting-edge science and appropriate technical research and innovation.

The highly practical nature of the course enables you to work on real-world problems with engineering and environmental analysis and good practice guidance from industry, commerce, consultation, research groups and your tutor/supervisor, as you would in professional practice. Each year both the MEng and BEng includes a group project and individual coursework based on real problems sourced from industrial collaborators and technical modules that reflect current research work in the School and is designed to introduce you to the latest thinking in the subject. This means that while you learn the technical and scientific content of your degree, these projects and coursework will allow you the opportunity to develop the professional skills required including: problem assessment and resolution; project, task and time management; risk assessment; team work and leadership; technical report writing etc.

In addition, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice. 

Teaching methods include:
lectures, with associated tutorials, workshops, lab and fieldwork.

The assessment types are varied throughout the course with both individual and group work assessed using methods, such as presentations, laboratory work, formal examinations, technical reports, online quizzes, posters and computer simulation.

An estimated percentage breakdown of your final grade assessment is as follows: 

  • Formal examinations: 55%
  • Individual coursework and research dissertation (lab, field, design and desktop studies): 30%
  • Group project and other work: 15%

On successful completion, you should have knowledge of:

  • Contemporary environmental impacts, uncertainties and risks relating to a built and natural environment, including social and economic impacts, regulatory aspects and health and safety.
  • Scientific principles to enable an appreciation of the scientific and engineering context and understanding of historic, current and future impacts and technologies for resilience.
  • Appropriate mathematical methods, concepts in physical and computer based environmental modelling to analyse environmental engineering problems and to design systems.
  • Relevant principles of applied mechanics in fluid/hydraulics, hydrology, soil mechanics, geo-technics, and structural mechanics and application in hydro-geo environmental engineering. 
  • ICT and laboratory knowledge of skills, research methods and strategies of acquiring, interpreting, analysing data and information and critical understanding of the techniques.
  • Business and organisational awareness of civil based environmental engineering industries, the concepts and management processes for environmental, financial, societal and technical risks. 
  • Core civil & environmental engineering subjects, informed by current thinking/ industrial practice, research and developments.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Investigate and define environmental problems and identify sustainability, health and safety issues and risk and apply civil & environmental related problem-solving skills with the understanding of codes of practice, standards and regulations in environmental engineering applications.
  • Review, classify and describe the systems and components, select, apply quantitative analytical methods, models and visualisation techniques/ computer software to assess the risk and performance relevant to the engineering to solve environmental problems.
  • Formulate plans for undertaking environment risk management or sustainable development as solution by applying the engineering and scientific principles, approaches, tools, processes and systems and ability to work with technical uncertainty at a range of scales
  • Apply more advance principles of applied mechanics, method and models with problem-solving skills by collecting and comprehensively interpreting qualitative and quantitative data, critically and systematically assess problems, evaluate effectiveness of new ideas, techniques and materials, to obtain planed and synthesised solutions in both familiar and new situations.

DHLE 2014/15

In a typical week, you will have up to 20 ‘contact’ hours of teaching and learning support.

This generally breaks down as follows:

  • Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week.
  • Medium group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials each week.
  • Small group teaching: 4 hours of practical work (laboratory or field work) 
  • Personal tutorial: 2 hours of tutorials and guidance (individual or group projects) each week 

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 20 hours of Personal study (guided and self-guided) each week, eg. Revising guided handouts, online activities, independent research, working-out the tutorials and reading reference materials etc.

Civil & Environmental engineering is a global industry and the course attracts students from around the world including Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. You will join students from many different nationalities and cultures, which will give an international perspective to your studies and future career as an engineer. The content of the course continuously refers to the international context in which civil & environmental engineering takes place.

We have academic and research links with many countries, providing opportunities for student exchanges and overseas field trips. If you opt for a sandwich year, you can spend time studying or placement in abroad; we currently have links with universities in Malaysia, Oman, Canada and the European Union.

As our civil and environmental engineering courses have been designed to meet the needs of niche and highly specialised national and international markets, the focus of our lectures, projects, caste studies and coursework are based on various real life civil related environmental engineering issues.

Where our graduates work

Civil & Environmental Engineering is a new course. However, our Civil Engineering graduates have gone on to occupy positions in engineering consultancies, contractors such as Arup, Mott Macdonald, Buro Happold, Atkins, Jacobs, Interserve Project Ltd, Water & Wastewater Companies (e.g. Severn Trent), and local authorities (e.g. Warwickshire County Council).

Previous Environmental Management graduates have gone on to work in industry, local authorities, Environmental Regulators (Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and Scottish Environmental Protection Agency), water and energy utilities, universities and consultancies. Others have undertaken further study, such as a PhD.

Our disaster-management graduates have secured employment in the public and/or private sector working for organisations such as the Red Cross UK, local authorities and the Environment Agency. Asia Disaster Preparedness Centre, RedR India, Oxfam GB, All hands, Lloyds Register, The Catholic Overseas Development Agency (CAFOD) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the University. The Contract will detail your rights and the obligations you will be bound by during your time as a student and will contain the obligations that the University will owe to you.
